EGYPTIAN MUMMIES

Lighting design for the state exhibition “Egyptian Mummies” at the Württemberg State Museum

For the major state exhibition "Egyptian Mummies – Immortality in the Land of the Pharaohs" at the Württemberg State Museum, we developed a comprehensive lighting concept for the museum presentation of these sensitive objects. The goal was to create an atmospheric, contemplative atmosphere that does justice to the themes of death, ritual, and eternity—while simultaneously meeting the highest conservation standards.

The lighting design was carried out in close collaboration with the exhibition designers and restorers. Working with light-sensitive materials such as linen, papyrus, wood, and painted coffins posed a particular challenge. Targeted accent lighting, controlled light intensities, and subtle ambient lighting made it possible to highlight exhibits without endangering them.

Display case lighting, ambient lighting, and path guidance were carefully coordinated. Light guided visitors and carried them emotionally through the exhibition—from burial rituals and concepts of the afterlife to modern research on mummies.
