River Pool Berlin

Lighting design for the thatched house in the Flussbad Berlin

The thatched house at Flussbad Berlin is an extraordinary place, recognized by The Times as one of the 100 most beautiful places in the world. Nestled in the Spree landscape, the project combines architectural excellence, nature, and urban living—supported by sensitive and atmospheric lighting design by Fischer & Partner Lichtdesign.

Architecture & Design

Thatched roof architecture meets urban oasis

The architecture of the thatched house was designed by Monika Gogl (GOGL Architects). Her keen sense for harmony between architecture and nature is evident in every detail: the thatched roof blends seamlessly into the surroundings, creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Founder Claus Sendlinger laid the foundation for the project with his sustainable approach. Under his leadership, the thatched house became not only an architectural highlight but also a center for meetings, culture, and events in the heart of Berlin.

Our lighting solution

Atmospheric lighting design for architecture & nature

Fischer & Partner Lichtdesign developed a tailor-made lighting concept that underscores the architecture while respecting the natural surroundings. Key points:

Elements of lighting design

  • In the skylight of the thatched roof, the LED lighting was invisibly integrated into the glass elements.
  • All-round LED spotlighting, controllable in two colors, enables flexible scenes for event operations and cultural events.
  • The entire interior lighting of the dome is DMX-controlled – for precise control, variable lighting moods, and professional event technology.
  • An integrated lighting and sound control system was developed for the building, managed via a shared control panel. This highly complex media control system combines lighting, acoustics, and event technology into a holistic system.
  • All other lights were handmade – designed and manufactured specifically as unique pieces for this building.

Use & atmosphere

A place of relaxation, culture and encounter

The thatched house offers spacious terraces and direct access to the Spree River – a place for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. It also serves as a cultural center: workshops, exhibitions, and concerts make the house a lively meeting place for locals and guests alike.

Sustainability

Lighting design in harmony with nature and urban development

The thatched house represents sustainable urban development. The concept relies on energy-efficient LED systems, durable technology, and the respectful use of resources – including in the lighting design.

Awards

The thatched house in the Flussbad Berlin received international attention when TIME magazine included the location in its list of the "World's Greatest Places." This recognizes the unique combination of architecture, nature, and urban living worldwide.
